Dog food recall after Victoria Police dog squad death


A dry dog food product is being recalled following a spate of illness among Victoria Police canines, including one who died. Mars Petcare Australia has voluntarily recalled ADVANCE Dermocare dry food, after learning a number of dogs have been affected by megaesophagus, a condition not usually linked to food.

The New South Wales Government has committed $475,000 to improve the Q fever vaccine and raise awareness of the condition. Q fever is a bacterial infection spread to humans from animals including cattle, sheep, goats, kangaroos, feral pigs, cats and dogs.

An Australian study has found that veterinarians often feel pressured by owners to prescribe antibiotics for horses or cattle without seeing the animals. Antimicrobial dispensing to bona fide clients without formal consultation was not reported in companion animal practice, but was commonly reported in horse and cattle practice, the researchers said.
