Online Database of Canine Inherited Genetic Disorders Now Available


A new study on the genetic epidemiology of canine disease risk variants has enabled the creation of an online database of inherited genetic disorders. In the largest canine genetics study to date, researchers from Wisdom Health and Genoscoper Laboratories examined the prevalence of 152 genetic diseases in more than 100,000 mixed-breed and purebred dogs.

Blame the mother's gene: Discovery for a blinding canine eye disease


A new gene for canine congenital eye disease has been identified. Defective RBP4 leads to vitamin A deficiency and abnormal eye development during pregnancy. The study defines a novel recessive mode of maternal inheritance, which may underlie other types of birth defects.

Local Queensland councils, unowned dogs and cats – legal position of the veterinarians in Queensland


As part of its strategic planning, the Qld executive and branches are looking at improving and clarifying the rights of veterinarians in respect to abandoned and unowned animals that come into the veterinarians care. Also, there have been concerns raised by members councils expecting veterinarians to take responsibility for these animals with some inspectors refusing to pick up animals from veterinary clinics unless they have a signed certificate of good health.
